Getting your eyes checked regularly is key to maintaining your vision and general eye health. While we understand that a trip to the Optometrist is not high on anyone’s list of “Favourite Things To Do” we like to think that we offer the people of Colchester a friendly, pleasant and effective service. We deliver expert eye care and like to think that we are the best optometrist Colchester could ever ask for.

Myopia, more commonly called “short sightedness” is perhaps the main reason people to come to us. This is something that can happen at any age, with up to a third of people in the UK affected to some degree. Traditionally we have dealt with myopia using corrective lenses - either traditional spectacles or contact lenses.

These traditional solutions are highly effective and very simple to use. They are a tried and trusted solution and many of us who wear glasses will attest that a good pair of spectacles becomes part of your whole look. But we also understand that while this is fine for adults, the situation can be different for children.

Children are not considered to be suitable candidates for contact lenses, which means if they need eyesight correction glasses are the only option. Anyone who started wearing spectacles while at school will probably remember how mean some children can be about such a dramatic change in appearance. This can be a particularly acute problem for teenagers who are generally very sensitive about their appearance.

We are pleased to be able to offer a solution. Technology has moved on and are now able to correct the vision of children, teens and adults alike without the need to wear spectacles or contact lenses. This is because we are able to offer Ortogeratology or “Ortho K” contacts, a genuinely game changing technology which completely revolutionises the treatment of myopia. Unlike the familiar types of corrective lenses – whether they are in contact with the eye or worn as spectacles can only work while they are being worn. By contrast Ortho K lenses work even after you have taken them out.

This may sound too good to be true but Ortho K lenses are worn you sleep. Overnight the cornea – the clear dome making up the front of the eye – is gently reshaped giving the user clear vision once the lenses are removed in the morning. This can give you a full day of 20/20 vision without the glasses or contact lenses.

Not needing glasses or contact lenses all day can be liberating for adults, but in the unforgiving environment of the playground they really help with the confidence issues associated with beginning to wear spectacles. Not needing glasses can also be particularly useful for children with active lives - no more lost or broken glasses from sporting accidents or playground hijinks, just clear, hassle free vision all day long.

So come and see the friendliest optometrist Colchester has to offer, because correcting your vision even when you are not wearing lenses is not the only amazing thing we can do to improve your life. Our eye exams can also flag up eyesight threatening conditions such as glaucoma but also non-vision related issues such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure and even diabetes.

We are here to serve the people of Colchester. We have the technology, the skills and the experience to safeguard your eyesight, your eye health and to monitor your general physical wellbeing. So do not be a stranger – book an appointment now and find out what your local optometrist can do for you!
